Images accepted in previous Maitland salons, or images considered by the organising committee to be substantially the same, are ineligible for entry in any of the sections.

There are no restrictions on the subject matter of images except as outlined in the definitions for Nature and Monochrome sections.

Entries in Nature sections must comply with the Nature or Wildlife definitions.

Wildlife Awards: To be eligible for these awards the entry must comply with the Wildlife definition and the entry must be marked with a ‘W’ in the online entry system.

The submission of entries signifies acceptance of the following conditions:

Eligibility: The exhibition is open to anyone; however an entry may be rejected when the sponsoring organization or its agent, in its reasonable discretion, believes the entry does not conform to the exhibition rules and conditions.

The Salon Chairman, persons closely involved in the organisation of the salon, persons in charge of the handling of the salon software, and judges are not permitted to enter the salon.

Recognition: The salon is conducted in accordance with the recommendations of and approval by:

The Fédération Internationale de l’Art Photographique (FIAP)           2017/014

The Photographic Society of America (PSA)                                     2017/…

The Royal Photographic Society (RPS)                                             2017/002

The Australian Photographic Society (APS)                                       2017/001

Subject to the rules of the relevant organisations, acceptances in this exhibition are eligible for inclusion in applications for FIAP honours, APS honours, PSA Star/Galaxy Ratings and PSA ‘Who’s Who’.

In order to have legal authority on those who do not respect the rules of FIAP, all participants in the 2017 International Salon must tick the box when entering the Salon which states:

FIAP info-317-patronage-e

For more information contact FIAP

“I hereby expressly agree to the FIAP document 2014/317 E  <Conditions for application and regulations for organization if international photographic events> and especially to chapter II  <Regulations for International photographic events under FIAP patronage>  dealing under Section II.2 with the FIAP participation rules and the red list.”

Participants who do not tick the box will be excluded from the 2017 Salon.

Image creation and reproduction: Entries must originate as photographs (image captures of objects via light sensitivity) made by the entrant on photographic emulsion or acquired digitally.

All final work must be on electronic file, or on photographic or electronic print material, mounting excepted.

By virtue of submitting an entry, the entrant certifies the work as his/her own (aliases are not permitted).

The entrant permits the sponsors to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for publication and/or display in media related to the exhibition. This may include low resolution posting on a website. Note: Entrants who indicate that their images may not be reproduced or used may not be eligible for awards or inclusion in audiovisuals of the exhibition and could be subject to disqualification by the exhibition sponsor.

By submitting an entry the entrant certifies that in the process of capturing the image the entrant did not violate any of the standards of ethical practice of FIAP, PSA, RPS or APS.

Authenticity: With the sole act of submitting his/her images or files to a salon under FIAP Patronage, the entrant accepts without exception and with no objection that the submitted images can be investigated by FIAP to establish if these obey FIAP regulations and definitions even if the entrant is not a member of FIAP; that FIAP will use any means at its disposal for this undertaking; that any refusal to cooperate with FIAP or any refusal to submit the original files as captured by the camera, or failure to provide sufficient evidence, will be sanctioned by FIAP and that in case of sanctions following the non compliance with FIAP regulations, the name of the entrant will be released in any form useful to inform the breaches of the rules. It is recommended to leave the EXIF data in the submitted files intact in order to ease eventual investigations.

Copyright: The copyright of each image entered always remains with the author of the image. The exhibition assumes no liability for any misuse of copyright.

Note: The salon committee reserves the right to check all accepted images for copyright violation.

Image alteration and computer generation: Except for the restrictions on Nature images described in the Nature definition, images may be altered, either digitally or otherwise, by the entrant.  Images may not be constructed entirely with a computer and all photographic components must have been photographed by the entrant who holds copyright of the complete works submitted.

Image titles: Each image must have a unique title. Images without a title will not be judged.

Once an image has been accepted in a PSA Recognized exhibition, that same image, or a like “in camera” or a “reproduction” duplicate of that image:

  1. May not be re-entered in any section of the same Division Star Ratings class in that exhibition regardless of media, format, or title.
  2. May not be re-titled for entry in any other PSA Recognized exhibition.

Titles may not include file extensions such as .jpg or .jpeg. (or any other camera capture filenames). Words such as “untitled” or “no title” are not acceptable as part or all of an image’s title, nor are camera capture filenames or titles consisting of only numbers.

Titles must use the English alphabet and can contain no more than 30 characters (including spaces). Image titles may be in a foreign language, but the English alphabet must be used.

The titles of prints and digital images should be exactly as you want them to appear in the catalogue.

No title or identification of the maker shall be visible anywhere on the face of an image or print mount.

Titles will not be announced at judging.

Email List

By virtue of submitting an entry, the Entrant accepts that his/her email address will be used for communicating information about this salon and future Maitland salons. The Entrant may opt out of this email list by notifying enquiries@maitlandsalon.org.  Warning: opting out of this email list before the salon catalogs are posted may result in the entrant not receiving important information about the salon.

Catalogue

A printed 64 page catalogue with all award winners reproduced will be available at an additional price.  All entrants who do not want a printed catalogue may download a PDF version of the catalogue from the website.

Cost of 64 page printed catalogue:

Australian entrants:          $20

Monochrome images may be entered in the PID colour section. Entrants are reminded that monochrome images entered in a PID colour section only count towards PID Colour Class stars, not Monochrome Class stars.

VIGEX SEND-ON entrants -You may indicate that your prints should be sent on from Maitland to the VIGEX print salon. There is no cost for this transfer but you would need to register VIGEX and pay their entry fees and print return cost if required.

[/ms_accordion_item][ms_accordion_item title=’Submitting Entries’ icon=’fa-flag’ status=’close’]

BOTH PRINTS AND DIGITAL IMAGES MUST BE ENTERED THROUGH THIS SYSTEM

The online entry system does NOT accept group entries. Each entrant must complete a separate ONLINE entry. Print entries may be submitted as a group but the package must contain copies of the individual entry mailing label for each entrant. Each entrant must pay a separate entry fee by PayPal.

Only use the link on the entry form to pay your entry fees.

PRINTS

Each entrant submitting prints must complete the on-line entry form, including payment by PayPal.

Print sizes: Prints must be no larger than 508 x 406mm (20” x 16”) and no smaller than 203 x 203 mm (8” x 8”) or equivalent area. The size of prints we recommend for Exhibition purposes should be no smaller than 30 x 21cm (A4).

Unmounted prints are preferred. Mounted prints will be accepted provided the total thickness of the print and the mount does not exceed 4 mm. These restrictions are necessary because of the method used to display accepted prints. Black mounts are preferred and images with mounts of any other colour may not be displayed in the public art gallery.

Identification.  Please print the mailing lablel set and attach the label for each entry to the back of each print.  Attached the mailing label portion to your postage packet.

Posting. Entrants are advised to send their entries by airmail and allow adequate time for delivery and a similar time for the return of their entries. Packages arriving after the closing date for entries will not be judged. The postal address for print entries will be made available as part of the entry payment process.

Entrants  must submit an online entry form PLUS include a printed entry form with the prints being posted.  The entrant must sign the printed entry form in the space provided to verify authorisation for the exhibition to destroy exhibitors prints in lieu of returning them otherwise the full entry fee shall apply.

Entrants submitting prints must indicate in the online entry system whether they want their prints “returned by post”, “forwarded to VIGEX” or “destroyed”. Print entries will only be returned if “return by post” is indicated and if the nominated fee for return postage is paid. If prints are to be returned, airmail is used if possible. If you nominate “entrant will pick up prints” please include a note with your prints to indicate who will be collecting your prints (and a telephone number so that person can be contacted if necessary).

All care is taken in the handling and postage of the prints but no responsibility can be accepted for damage or loss of prints.

DIGITAL IMAGES

The maximum image size is 1920 pixels horizontal and 1200 pixels vertical when the image is viewed with correct orientation. Maximum size of closed file is 2 MB.

Images larger than the permitted size will be rejected. Smaller images are permitted but will be projected smaller on screen.

File format must be JPEG.

Digital files should have the same name as the title of the relevant digital image in the online entry system. For example, an image called “Golden sunset” should have a file name “Golden sunset.jpg”. Titles and file names must use the English alphabet and may include numbers. No other characters are permitted.

Images will be displayed to the judges at the size submitted, using an Epson EB-1985WU projector with a display resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels and operating in sRGB colour space.

The projection background is black.

Any borders should be included within the dimensions shown above. Please keep borders to a minimum, e.g. to separate images from the background if necessary.

PAYPAL PAYMENTS

All entry and postage fees must be paid by PayPal. You do not need a PayPal account to use the online payment system.

Each entrant must complete an online entry and submit an individual PayPal payment. Please do not include two or more entrants on the one PayPal payment.

If the name of the PayPal account you are using is not the same as the name of the entrant, please send an email to payments@maitlandsalon.org with a note of the entrant’s name, the name of the PayPal account and the PayPal reference number. This will ensure that your payment is credited to the correct entrant.

NAME OF ENTRANT

PSA requires entrants in all PSA recognized exhibitions to provide name and country data exactly the same in each exhibition entered in order that they might receive proper credit for acceptances. Entrants must use the name they have used for membership of PSA, RPS or APS, or the name they intend to use when applying for honours from those or other photographic organisations. Aliases are not permitted.

NAMING IMAGES

In the online entry system, both prints and digital images should be given titles exactly as you want them to appear in the catalogue. Image titles should be no more than 30 characters, including spaces.

[/ms_accordion_item][ms_accordion_item title=’Definitions’ icon=’fa-flag’ status=’close’]

Maitland International Salon of Photography has patronage from the following organisations:
The Fédération Internationale de l’Art Photographique (FIAP)
The Photographic Society of America (PSA)
The Royal Photographic Society (RPS)
The Australian Photographic Society (APS)
All entries shall conform to the stricter of the following definitions for acceptances to be validated by all the International Organizations granting recognition or patronage.

MONOCHROME

PSA: An image is considered to be Monochrome only if it gives the impression of having no color (i.e. contains only shades of gray which can include pure black and pure white) OR it gives the impression of being a grayscale image that has been toned in one color across the entire image. (For example by Sepia, red, gold, etc.)

A grayscale or multi-colored image modified or giving the impression of having been modified by partial toning, multi toning or by the inclusion of spot coloring does not meet the definition of monochrome and shall be classified as a Color Work.

FIAP: A black and white work fitting from the very dark grey (black) to the very clear grey (white) is a monochrome work with the various shades of grey.

A black and white work toned entirely in a single colour will remain a monochrome work able to stand in the black and white category; such a work can be reproduced in black and white in the catalogue of a salon under FIAP Patronage.

On the other hand a black and white work modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one colour becomes a colour work (polychrome) to stand in the colour category; such a work requires colour reproduction in the catalogue of a salon under FIAP Patronage.

NATURE

Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archaeology, in such a fashion that a well-informed person will be able to identify the subject material and certify its honest presentation.

  • The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality while maintaining high technical quality.
  • Human elements shall not be present, except where those human elements are integral parts of the nature story such as nature subjects, like barn owls or storks, adapted to an environment modified by humans, or where those human elements are in situations depicting natural forces, like hurricanes or tidal waves.
  • Scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals are permissible. Photographs of human created hybrid plants, cultivated plants, feral animals, domestic animals, or mounted specimens are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement.
  • No techniques that add, relocate, replace, or remove pictorial elements except by cropping are permitted.
  • Techniques that enhance the presentation of the photograph without changing the nature story or the pictorial content, or without altering the content of the original scene, are permitted including HDR, focus stacking and dodging/burning.
  • Techniques that remove elements added by the camera, such as dust spots, digital noise, and film scratches, are allowed.
  • Stitched images are not permitted.
  • All allowed adjustments must appear natural.
  • Colour images can be converted to grey-scale monochrome.
  • Infrared images, either direct-captures or derivations, are not allowed.

WILDLIFE

Images entered in Wildlife sections meeting the Nature Photography Definition above are further defined as:

  • One or more extant zoological or botanical organisms free and unrestrained in a natural or adopted habitat.
  • Landscapes, geologic formations, photographs of zoo or game farm animals, or of any extant zoological or botanical species taken under controlled conditions are not eligible in Wildlife sections.
  • Wildlife is not limited to animals, birds and insects. Marine subjects and botanical subjects (including fungi and algae) taken in the wild are suitable wildlife subjects, as are carcasses of extant species.

Wildlife images may be entered in Nature sections of Exhibitions.

PHOTO TRAVEL

PSA: A Photo Travel image expresses the characteristic features or culture of a land as they are found naturally. There are no geographic limitations. Images from events or activities arranged specifically for photography, or of subjects directed or hired for photography are not appropriate. Close up pictures of people or objects must include features that provide information about the environment.

Techniques that add, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping, are not permitted. The only allowable adjustments are removal of dust or digital noise, restoration of the appearance of the original scene, and complete conversion to greyscale monochrome. Other derivations, including infrared, are not permitted. All allowed adjustments must appear natural.
